you can master script story structure

I believe everyone has at least one great story to tell, and I know that I can help you develop your story idea into a well-told, well-crafted, marketable screenplay.

How? By sharing with you the same methods I’ve used to help develop major motion pictures for years with A-list writers. I have a proven record to help take your writing to the next (and most sellable) level!

Let me show you how . . .

FOR THE PAST 18 YEARS

I have been the head of development for The Story Company, located at Director Tim Story’s production offices. During the time I’ve worked with him, I’ve helped Tim develop box office sensations like "Barbershop," the original "Fantastic Four" movies, along with the "Think Like a Man" and "Ride Along" franchises. Tim’s movies have earned over a billion dollars.

"Doug Griffin is my personal story structure guru. His talents in story analysis and development have been invaluable in the success of the movies I’ve directed. I highly recommend his services. He will identify your story roadblocks; diagnose the weaknesses in your plot and character arcs, and then offer a clear and common sense solution that will make your screenplay a winner."

Tim Story

(Director of "Barbershop" "Taxi" "Fantastic Four" "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" "Think Like A Man" "Ride Along" "Think Like A Man Too" "Ride Along 2" "Shaft" (2019)

"AS THE STORY COMPANY'S 'STORY GUY',

I may read two hundred screenplays a year, sent over by Hollywood studios, production companies, and independent producers wanting to attach Tim as the director. After reading thousands of screenplays, analyzing hundreds of contemporary and classic films, and studying the history of story, I was able to identify something most screenwriters don’t know ─ THERE ARE 7 UNIQUE STORIES our western culture tells, over and over."

I've identified these 7 stories as . . .

Chasing Your Dream

“Rocky” “Hidden Figures”

“Whiplash” “Ford vs Ferrari”

Avenging the Wrong

“Taken” “The Godfather Part II”

“Gladiator” “The Revenant”

Redeeming Your Soul

“Fatal Attraction” “Goodfellas”

“Greenbook” “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Surviving Your Choice

“Loving” “The Blind Side”

“Joker” “Parasite”

Escaping Your Prison

“Twelve Years A Slave” “Gravity”

"Moonlight” "Marriage Story”

Solving the Riddle

“The Hangover” “Bourne Identity”
“The Departed” “Knives Out”

Saving the Village

“The Dark Knight” “Schindler’s List”

“Spotlight” “Black Panther”

“Doug Griffin is both deeply knowledgeable about storytelling and a true pleasure to work with. He deeply respects and understands the process, asks the right questions (at the right time!), and offers a lot of technical savvy. We truly enjoyed working with Doug on the "Ride Along" movies— he cares about writers and writing in a uniquely tangible way.”

Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi

“Crazy/Beautiful” “The Tuxedo” “Aeon Flux” “Clash of the Titans” “R.I.P.D.” “Ride Along” “Ride Along 2” "Destroyer"

Although they have evolved over time, these are, in essence, the original seven stories that our ancient ancestors told around the campfire. While all seven share the same THREE ACT FRAMEWORK, each has its own unique path, with distinctive scenes, essential sequences, and exclusive obstacles the storyteller must include in order for the audience to feel satisfied. Many of the screenplays I read have a strong central idea or a compelling main character, but the script falls flat because the writers didn’t know which story they were telling, or how to develop it effectively.

"Doug Griffin is one of the best there is at breaking down a screenplay. I've worked with him on a couple of scripts, one of which spawned a 4 movie franchise and a TV series. Specifically he is a story hawk who will call out your story strengths and weaknesses. I'm not saying his input will give you a movie franchise, but it will certainly make your script better. Hiring Doug is a well spent investment in a potential screenwriting career."

Writer of "Barbershop", Staff Writer of "Fam" CBS, Co-Producer "The Neighborhood" CBS
